What is Life Coaching?

Life Coaching is a relatively new profession based on motivation and self help. It involves helping clients find the marvelous gifts life has to offer.

After more than 30 years of studying and reading self-help books, attending countless seminars, listening to tapes as I drove in the car, even watching motivational videos, the help was nothing more than a quick fix.

During the past 20 years I have owned several businesses that involved human interaction, I discovered that the self help books offer ways to manage problems and that makes you feel better temporarily, but they always return to hurt you.

I tried the therapy route, but they spent weeks on end talking about the past. In reality, the past can't hurt us. All the pain I was feeling was the result of the difference between how I wanted my past to be, compared to how it turned out. Then I met a Psychiatrist who showed me a system he was working on that was based on not trying to fix the problem, instead it was based on studying yourself for a greater understanding of the inner you. The real meaning of life is to discover who you really are---- not who you think you are.

That was 10 years ago and I have been studying the lessons life teaches us. That is right, Life is the teacher and we are the students. I often asked my friend why he did not use this system in his practice and he told me that people who visit a therapist, expect therapy. People who visit a psychiatrist, expect psychiatry. I asked my friend who teaches life's lessons, he pondered and said, no one does anymore. I asked him who use to teach these lessons.

He explained that in the olden days, people lived in a tribe or village. The elders would pass these important lessons down from generation to generation. Each time the lessons would change slightly but the dynamics of each lesson were the same. As our society advanced, people moved into cities and towns, family members were spread across the country. People lives became involved in "getting what they want" instead of discovering "why they want" in the first place.

About that time I heard of a man who was developing a new profession called Life Coaching. His name was Thomas Leonard. He started Coach U and later founded Coachville and The Graduate School of Coaching. Thomas was a remarkable man and helped develop the coaching profession. Thomas passed away suddenly in February 2003.

Although there are many life coaches currently practicing in the world, I have developed a unique program for my clients. It is called The Healthy Life Program.

I hope this answers your question what is life coaching. Life is a marvelous gift, please don't take it for granted.
